Live as one people – Otumfuo to Bawku factions

Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has urged the rival factions in the Bawku chieftaincy conflict to commit to lasting peace, reminding them that they are “one people” who must continue to live together regardless of the outcome of the mediation process.

His appeal came during a rare joint meeting between representatives of the Mamprugu and Kusasi groups at the Manhyia Palace Jubilee Hall in Kumasi on Monday, December 1, 2025.

This meeting followed months of separate engagements aimed at resolving the long-standing dispute.

The discussions were held in a notably cordial and respectful atmosphere, with both sides admitting that there is no legitimate reason for continued conflict.

The Asantehene commended their maturity and peaceful conduct, calling it a positive sign for the ongoing peace efforts.

He encouraged the leaders to start preparing their followers for a future without violence, emphasising that lasting peace in Bawku will depend on everyone’s willingness to coexist.

“Whatever the outcome of the mediation, you will still have to live together as brothers and sisters,” he reminded them as he called for an end to the cycles of mistrust and unrest that have troubled the area.

Otumfuo is expected to present his mediation report and recommendations to President John Dramani Mahama in the coming days, paving the way for a broader consultative meeting with all key stakeholders.
