Police launches manhunt for man who forced child to smoke

The Ghana Police Service has initiated an investigation into a viral video that depicts a man allegedly providing a substance thought to be a cigarette to a child.

The police have stated that they are making every effort to identify and apprehend the suspect involved, as well as to ensure the safety and protection of the child.

They have also called upon members of the public who possess any information regarding the identity or location of the man or the child to report to the nearest Police Station.

In the meantime, the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection has denounced the act and has advised parents, guardians, caregivers, and the public to fulfil their shared responsibility in safeguarding children and young people from harm.

In a press statement issued on Friday, November 21, the Ministry characterised the incident as a blatant case of child endangerment, highlighting that exposing children to harmful substances constitutes both abuse and a violation of the child’s rights and dignity.

The statement underscored that such behaviour is subject to legal penalties.

The Ministry noted that this act violates the Children’s Act, 1998 (Act 560), which requires the protection of every child from physical, psychological, and moral harm.

It also undermines the goals outlined in the Early Childhood Care and Development Policy, which advocates for the comprehensive development of children in safe and nurturing environments.
