Gender Ministry condemns viral video of man assaulting wife

The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MoGCSP) has condemned a violent attack that was recorded in a viral social media video, in which a man, allegedly a landlord, is seen physically assaulting a woman who is purported to be his wife.

In a statement issued on Monday, November 17, the Ministry characterised the incident as “barbaric,” emphasising that no individual has the right to inflict any form of abuse on another person under any circumstances.

It stated that the act infringes upon the rights of the victim and is subject to legal penalties.

The Ministry announced that the sector Minister has reached out to the Ghana Police Service to ensure a comprehensive investigation and to guarantee that justice is achieved. It also urged eyewitnesses with pertinent information to assist law enforcement authorities.

MoGCSP acknowledged that domestic and sexual violence continues to be a national issue and urged the public to report such incidents without delay.

“We reaffirm our commitment to collaborate with all relevant stakeholders in ensuring that perpetrators of domestic violence face the full rigours of the law,” the ministry stated in a release from its Public Affairs Unit.

The Ministry further called on the public to stay alert and report any suspected cases of abuse through the Domestic Violence Call Centre at 0800-111-222 or the Ministry’s Helpline of Hope call centre at 0800-800-800 / 0800-900-900, or to the nearest police station.
