Mob vandalizes police checkpoint after man shot dead near Gbintri

A 45-year-old man named Issah Nawutou Baricle was allegedly shot and killed by a police officer on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, while he was on his way to the market in Gbintri, in the East Mamprusi Municipality of the North East Region.

The shooting occurred around 11 a.m. at a police checkpoint in Gagbini, along the Gushegu–Gbintri road.

Eyewitnesses said Issah was riding on the back of a motorbike with his brother when they were stopped by an armed police officer who allegedly demanded a bribe.

The officer reportedly asked for GH¢10, but Issah said he only had GH¢5 and questioned the extortion, pleading with the officer to consider the poor road conditions that already burdened residents.

According to witnesses, the argument escalated, and the officer drew his gun.

When Issah attempted to flee, the officer chased him into a nearby farmland and shot him.

His body was taken to the Baptist Medical Centre in Nalerigu, where he was pronounced dead.

Following the incident, angry residents allegedly vandalised the police checkpoint in protest of the shooting.
