BoG launches cedi@60 anniversary
The Bank of Ghana has officially launched the Cedi@60 celebrations to commemorate 60 years of the Cedi.
The year-long celebration will feature a series of national events reflecting on the cedi’s historic journey and its vital role in Ghana’s economic independence.
The launch ceremony, held on October 28, 2025, in Accra, introduced a calendar of activities, including exhibitions, policy dialogues, and stakeholder engagements, designed to strengthen public confidence in the cedi and encourage financial innovation.
In his address, the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Johnson Pandit Asiama, announced that the activities will cater to Ghanaians of all ages.
These will include educational programmes on the cedi’s history, diaspora engagements on remittances, currency exhibitions tracing the evolution of the cedi, and public lectures and publications celebrating key milestones in the nation’s monetary development.
A major highlight of the celebration is an exhibition showcasing the transformation of the cedi from its introduction in 1965, through the 2007 redenomination, to today’s era of digital payments and financial inclusion.
Throughout the year, academic discussions and public education programmes will be held across the country to deepen understanding of Ghana’s monetary heritage.
The Cedi@60 celebration, themed “Sovereignty, Stability, and Resilience,” will run throughout 2025, culminating in national policy forums and engagements aimed at building greater trust in the cedi and reaffirming its enduring significance in Ghana’s economic story.
