Coronavirus: University of Ghana suspends lectures, as its student tests positive

The University of Ghana management has suspended lectures following a confirmed case of coronavirus involving one of its students.

The country’s premier university has also barred non-residential students from coming to its campus until further notice.

Checks by theghanareport.com revealed that the student had travelled from Dallas, US, to Accra on Monday, March 9. She had been to the campus of the University of Ghana (UG) and attended lectures at both the Business School  (G2) lecture hall and the School of Pharmacy new laboratory and lecture halls. Five people who interacted with the patient have been self-isolated to ensure their safety and that of others.

While it puts measures in place to curtail the spread of the disease, the university management has urged students, staff and the public to remain calm.

The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Ebenezer Oduro Owusu, in an address to the university community on Radio Universe on Sunday, March 15, 2020, said a COVID-19 case has been confirmed “involving one of our non-resident students who returned from an international trip.”

He said all students and members of the school community must remain calm as it was collaborating with the relevant stakeholders to ensure that the situation was contained.

“I’m using this platform to reach out to all our students and other members of the university community to reassure you of management’s commitment to ensure measures in the best interest of all and appeal to all of you to remain calm…

“Let us remember that the student case is an imported one and together with the institutional and national agencies, there is an integrated effort to handle the case at hand. There is no cause of fear since we are pulling all available resources and efforts together to ensure better management of the situation,” he said.

Meanwhile, the university has released a statement detailing how it is handling the situation.
