Court discharges alleged murderer of journalist Ahmed Suale

Daniel Owusu Koranteng, a suspect accused of murdering investigative journalist Ahmed Suale Hussein, has been acquitted by the District Court in Madina.

The late Suale Hussein was killed in 2019, an act widely perceived as a contract killing. Koranteng, a friend and colleague of the late journalist, faced two charges: abetment to commit a crime and murder, and was undergoing committal proceedings in court.

During a previous hearing, the prosecutor, Chief Inspector Nana Afuabamfoa Bamfo, informed the court that the case file had been forwarded to the Office of the Attorney-General for an evaluation of the evidence to ascertain if there were adequate grounds for prosecution.

On Tuesday, October 14, the prosecution informed the court that the Attorney-General had advised discontinuing the case due to a lack of sufficient evidence.

Koranteng, also referred to as Amakye, had been released on bail in May.

The facts of the case indicate that the accused had a close relationship with the deceased and his family before the incident.

In June 2018, tensions reportedly heightened when former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, aired images of Ahmed Suale on his television channel and incited violence against him.

Chief Inspector Bamfo stated in court that the deceased had later identified the accused as the individual who supplied Mr. Agyapong with his photographs and allegedly confronted him via WhatsApp.

Investigations disclosed that on January 16, 2019, following the airing of Suale’s images, he was shot and killed in Madina. The prosecutor noted that the accused, who had previously collaborated with the deceased at Tiger Eye P.I., led by investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas, was allegedly aware of the deceased’s residence and hiding places.

He purportedly directed two other suspects, who are currently at large, to the site where Ahmed Suale was shot and killed.

Call records reportedly indicated the accused’s presence near the deceased’s residence in Madina both before and during the murder.
