Judges must step up against cybercrime – Justice Amadu

Justice Tanko Amadu of Ghana’s Supreme Court has called on judges to strengthen their role in the fight against cybercrime, stressing that the Judiciary must stay ahead of rapidly evolving digital threats to protect citizens and the national reputation.

Speaking at a symposium on cybercrime and electronic evidence held in Accra, Justice Amadu urged judges from Ghana and Nigeria to continually build their knowledge and uphold justice in the face of increasing online fraud.

The event brought together judicial officers from both countries to enhance collaboration and improve their capacity to handle cyber-related cases.

Organised by the Commonwealth Secretariat Cyber Unit, in partnership with Ghana’s Judicial Training Institute and Nigeria’s Ministry of Justice, the symposium is part of efforts under the Commonwealth Cyber Declaration to build skills in investigating, prosecuting, and adjudicating cybercrime.

Justice Amadu, who also leads Ghana’s Judicial Training Institute, warned that cybercrime not only causes financial harm but also erodes trust in digital services.

He noted the serious reputational damage faced by both countries due to rising incidents of fraud.

“If care is not taken, this notoriety can tarnish our global reputation and deter foreign investments,” he stated.

He urged judges to ensure proper handling of digital evidence and to stay current with new technologies, noting that courts serve as the link between complex technical matters and legal standards.

He also stressed the importance of protecting due process and privacy rights while delivering justice.

Cyber fraud continues to rise in Ghana, with losses reaching GHC4.4 million in just the first quarter of 2025 alone, according to the Cyber Security Authority.
