Illegal mining threatens Railway safety in W/R – GRDA Boss
The Ghana Railway Development Authority (GRDA) says it is facing a difficult battle trying to protect railway lines in the Western Region from the destruction caused by illegal mining activities.
Dr. Frederick Appoh, Acting CEO of the Authority, described the situation as a “cat-and-mouse game,” revealing that illegal miners are constantly outsmarting patrol teams deployed to safeguard the railway corridors.
Speaking in an interview on October 6, 2025, Dr. Appoh explained that despite setting up a task force in May, the illegal miners, often referred to as galamseyers, continue to damage parts of the railway stretch.
According to him, the task force discovered fresh destruction only last week, exposing parts of the railway lines, especially near Akyem in the Tarkwa-Nsuaem area.
“These people understand when the patrol is coming. They know when we are going and when not to go there, so it’s like a cat and mouse situation,” he said.
He added that a more coordinated and consistent effort involving key ministries and the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) is needed to make any meaningful progress.
So far, nearly three kilometres of the 60-kilometre active rail line from Takoradi to Nsuta has been destroyed. The damage has halted manganese haulage and may cost up to $18 million to repair.
Authorities say 12 people have been arrested and are expected to appear in court today.
Locals say some of the miners bought the land from traditional leaders and use destructive high-pressure equipment known as “one leg” to rapidly degrade the area.
