Labourer on trial for stealing GH¢35,000
A 22-year-old labourer, Enoch Njofuni, is facing court after allegedly stealing GH¢35,000 from an electronics dealer in the Oti Region and fleeing to Accra to spend the money with friends.
The money, which was kept in a bag, was reportedly taken from the room of the victim, Kabiru Asmiu, while he was asleep.
After the theft, Njofuni is said to have confided in his friend, 20-year-old labourer Mmoafuni Mboribe, who allegedly advised him to leave for Accra the following day.
Upon arriving in the capital, the two friends lodged at the shop of another acquaintance, Abdul Aziz, a 26-year-old barber, before moving into a hotel that cost GH¢250 a night.
Njofuni allegedly gave GH¢8,000 to Mboribe, who in turn gave GH¢3,000 to his girlfriend. Aziz is also said to have received GH¢1,000 and another GH¢3,000 for his girlfriend.
The victim, however, was alerted after someone in Accra who overheard the suspects talking about the money informed him.
He travelled to the city and managed to confront the suspects. By then, they were unable to account for the rest of the money, claiming it had been stolen from them.
The case has since been brought before the court.
Enoch Njofuni and Mmoafuni Mboribe are currently in custody, while Abdul Aziz has been granted bail as investigations continue.
