NDC opens nominations for Tamale Central today

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has officially opened nominations for its parliamentary primaries in the Tamale Central Constituency, beginning today, August 22, 2025.

This move comes in the wake of the unfortunate passing of Dr. Murtala Muhammed, the constituency’s Member of Parliament, who tragically lost his life following the helicopter crash on August 6, 2025.

In a statement released by General Secretary Fifi Fiavi Kwetey on Wednesday, August 20, the party detailed that nomination forms are available for collection and submission at the NDC Northern Regional Office. The nomination period will close on Sunday, August 24.

The statement also shared important guidelines for the primaries, highlighting that a certified delegates’ list will be provided to candidates after the vetting period.

Nomination forms are priced at GH₵5,000, with filing fees set at GH₵40,000. Notably, female candidates and those with disabilities will benefit from a 50 per cent reduction on the filing fee.

This comes after the opposition NPP announced their decision not to contest in the upcoming Tamale Central by-election as a mark of respect for the late MP, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed.

In a statement signed by General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, the NPP said the decision was unanimously taken at a National Steering Committee meeting held on Monday, August 11, 2025, at the party’s headquarters.

Citing Article 10(10)(1) of the NPP Constitution, the party explained that its choice was guided by the extraordinary circumstances surrounding the MP’s death and a desire to preserve national unity and respect the mood of mourning.

“The NPP believes it would be inhumane and insensitive to subject the country to a political contest so soon after such a devastating national tragedy,” the statement said.
