Illegal miner trapped to death in mining pit

An illegal miner, who defied orders to stay out of galamsey pits, has been trapped to death in a mining pit at Ekorso in the Eastern Region.

The deceased, Kofi Ohene, 23, went to an old mining site in the community to engage in illegal mining activities.

Kofi Ohene was in the company of two others on Monday at about 3 pm., when the incident occurred.

Public Relations Officer of the Eastern Regional Police Command, DSP Ebenezer Tetteh, told theghanareport.com,  while mining a dugout the group had created, it caved in, killing a miner.

According to him,  two others escaped unhurt, leaving the deceased under the heap of sand.

The police retrieved the body of the deceased from the pit. The PRO confirmed that the body after a careful inspection did not show marks of violence except, that it was covered in mud.

The police have since deposited the body at the Kibi government hospital.

Despite the government’s attempts to clamp down on illegal mining, some persons continue to engage in the illegality with impunity.
