Suspected arson attack claims one life in Aflao

A trader identified as Mary Allah has lost her life in an inferno that engulfed her residence in Adelakome, a suburb of Aflao in the Ketu South Municipality of the Volta Region.

The unfortunate incident occurred at about midnight on Monday, leaving many residents in shock, as attempts to rescue the victim from the fire proved futile.

Some family members alleged that the tragic incident might have been executed by an arsonist who succeeded this time after four previous attempts.

The brother of the deceased, Doe Allah, stated that they detected a suspicious substance, believed to be a petroleum product, around the door and window areas of the victim’s room, effectively “trapping her inside”.

“They poured petrol on the door, which was burning outside but not inside. This is the fifth time my sister’s property has been set ablaze,” he recounts.

Faustina Kwawu, the Assembly Member for Avoeme West Electoral Area, expressed her disappointment over the unfortunate incident, expressing hope that the police would help uncover the truth behind it.

“I’m short of words because we did not expect this to reach this level. I believe that with the help of the police, the suspects will be arrested”, she said.

She stated that due to the recurrence of this strange incident, a Community Watch Dog program would be established to prevent further crimes in the electoral area.

In June 2025, the deceased had called for increased security after her provision shop was broken into, set on fire, and an undisclosed amount of money was stolen.

Meanwhile, the body of the deceased has been taken to the Ketu South Municipal Hospital mortuary as the Aflao Police Command launches a full-scale investigation.
