If you touch an officer, we’ll deal with you – Police service
The Ghana Police Service has served notice that it would not countenance any form of an attack on its men and women.
This comes after a series of attacks on some officers of the service across the country.
Director-General of Public Affairs, DSP Sheila Abayie-Buckman, in an interview on Joy FM, said the attacks had become one too many and the time to act is now.
According to her, anyone who assaults any personnel will be dealt with by the law.
“We want the public to know that this impunity against police officers will not be countenanced. If we cannot protect ourselves, then we cannot do our work, so whatever legal means available will be explored to protect the officers.
“Any person who touches police officers should know that they would not go scot-free,” she stressed.
In just a week, about four personnel of the service have been attacked by some civilians.
A commercial bus driver ran over an officer of the MTTD, Sergeant Moses Appiah, at East Legon, killing him in the process while attempting to resist arrest.
Days after the incident, the police are still on a manhunt for the bus driver. He has been declared wanted by the Ghana Police Service.
In the Eastern Region, another personnel of the MTTD has sustained injuries after a taxi driver attempted knocking him down with his vehicle.
In a move to prevent being knocked down and possibly ran over by the driver, the policeman is captured in a viral video viral clinging onto the bonnet of the taxi.
According to the Eastern Regional Police PRO, DSP Ebenezer Tetteh, the driver refused to stop after the officer signalled him to pull over, for violating road traffic regulations.
The 36-year-old driver, Daniel Ofosu, has been arraigned.
Also in the Volta Region, irate residents at Kalakpa charged on police personnel and officers from the Forestry Commission after they arrested some persons for illegally felling Rosewood.
The mob after attacking the officers and inflicting machete wounds on them released two of the illegal timber operators who had been handcuffed for engaging in the illegality.
These recent developments have been of concern to the police hierarchy who have vowed to bring the perpetrators to book.
DSP Abayie-Buckman said no individual had the right to cause harm to any officer, even if they had flouted their modus operandi.
“There is no justification for harming a police officer in any manner, let alone kill them. Even if the police officer fails to follow any procedure, the person should not take it as an opportunity to harm the officer.”
Tell your men not to act as a concrete bollard by standing in front vehicles.
I can’t agree more with you my brother, lol
Nonsense talk from you the police, what punishment do you also give to the police that kill and molest the innocent civilian. Rubbish
