NPP rejects Ablekuma North re-run, threatens legal action

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has strongly objected to the Electoral Commission’s (EC) decision to conduct a re-run of elections in 19 polling stations within the Ablekuma North constituency.

At a press conference on July 3, 2025, NPP General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua firmly denied claims by the EC that the party had agreed to this expanded re-run during a meeting held on July 1.

He described the Commission’s move as an “abrupt and unexpected shift” from its earlier position.

According to the NPP, the EC had previously indicated both in parliamentary communications and directly to the party that only three polling station results were in question.

The sudden increase to 19 polling stations, the NPP argues, undermines consistency and transparency in the electoral process.

“This new decision raises serious questions about the integrity of the process,” Mr. Kodua said.

He demanded a clear explanation from the Commission for the expanded re-run and warned that the party would pursue legal action if the EC fails to reverse the decision.

The controversy stems from the recent general elections, with Ablekuma North emerging as a hotspot of electoral dispute.

The NPP’s outright rejection of the EC’s version of events underscores rising tensions between political stakeholders and the electoral body, particularly concerning the finality and credibility of election outcomes.

This development adds to growing public concern over electoral integrity in Ghana, a recurring issue in recent years.

Disputes of this nature often spark national debate and risk eroding trust in the country’s democratic institutions.

As of now, the Electoral Commission has not issued an official response to the NPP’s statement.
