The People’s National Party (PNP) has appealed to traditional leadership for intervention in what it sees as a politically charged effort to remove Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Torkornoo from office.
On July 1, 2025, PNP officials, led by party leader Janet Nabila, submitted a formal petition to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, urging him to step in and protect judicial independence.
Speaking to the media after the presentation, Nabila expressed strong disapproval of the ongoing process.
“We believe our traditional authorities must intervene when state institutions fail. As women, we are deeply disturbed that a female Chief Justice is being targeted in this way,” she said.
She accused the John Dramani Mahama and NDC administration of attempting to consolidate control over all branches of government and described the suspension as part of a broader political witch hunt.
The PNP leader, visibly emotional, shared that she was moved to tears listening to the Chief Justice recount her experience.
Nabila also questioned the government’s sincerity, pointing to the symbolic National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving that coincided with the legal proceedings.
“You cannot genuinely pray and give thanks while acting with such vindictiveness,” she stated, adding that the country needs a National Day of Repentance instead.
The PNP’s actions have sparked debate, with critics accusing the party of selective advocacy. But Nabila insisted the party’s stance is about justice, not politics.
By turning to the Asantehene, the PNP hopes his influence can guide the nation back toward fairness and constitutional balance.
