GHS sounds alarm on COVID-19 uptick at UG
The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has issued a public health advisory following a recent rise in COVID-19 cases detected at the University of Ghana, despite the World Health Organization no longer classifying the virus as a global emergency.
According to a GHS press release on Thursday, June 26, Ghana has experienced over a year of consistently low COVID-19 case numbers.
However, enhanced surveillance by the GHS and the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR), part of the national influenza and COVID-19 monitoring programme has identified a localized spike in cases on the university campus.
Fortunately, all reported cases so far are mild, with no hospitalizations.
Health officials are actively collaborating with university authorities to monitor the situation and adjust public health measures if needed.
The GHS stressed that while the outbreak is currently limited to the University of Ghana, it is a timely reminder that COVID-19 has not disappeared and periodic outbreaks may still occur, especially during certain seasons.
To help prevent further spread, GHS urges the public to stick to the following basic safety protocols:
-
Maintain physical distancing
-
Wear face masks in enclosed or poorly ventilated areas
-
Wash hands frequently with soap under running water or use hand sanitizer
-
Self-isolate if feeling unwell
-
Avoid crowded places
-
Seek prompt medical attention if symptoms arise
Watch for symptoms such as:
Fever, chills, cough, sore throat, shortness of breath, fatigue, or loss of taste/smell.
The Ministry of Health and GHS have assured both the university community and the general public that all necessary measures are in place to contain the situation and prevent wider spread.
GHS continues to call for public cooperation and responsible health practices—especially in high-risk environments—to keep everyone safe.
