Actors lash out at Gabby for comment on Ghanaian movie industry

Some stakeholders in the Ghanaian movie industry have taken a swipe at Gabby Okyere-Darko, a leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) following comments he made about the sector.

Mr Okyere-Darko in a Facebook post last Saturday expressed his disappointment in the industry, saying that the sector has failed to impact positively on the country’s development agenda.

Comparing the Ghanaian movie industry to US movie industry, Hollywood, Mr Okyere-Darko challenged stakeholders in the creative industry to explore ventures that would tie into government’s mantra of moving the country beyond aid.

But the statement was not taken lightly by some actors and actresses.

Actor Yvonne Nelson tweeted:

Hello @GabbyDarko is your interview on peacefm online real?? If it is I’m also disappointed! A few of us are pushing really hard for this industry! Since our leaders have also totally abandoned the industry, we contribute too, just like nurses,doctors..etc

Yvonne Nelson @yvonnenelsongh

How do you even compare Hollywood to our industry! It’s like comparing our economy to theirs!

@GabbyDarko kindly provide the titles of the 10 Ghanaian movies you watched and it’s production houses, and also if any Govt institutions had any influence to that effect. Thank you

@lydiaforson

The few creatives who manage to stay have to learn the hard way that it lacks structure, funding and the right professionals for the job; and so they’re forced to cut corners, underpay people etc just to make something presentable.

So Mr. @GabbyDarko our problem isn’t that we don’t want to be criticized; it’s the condescension and simplification of a very complex issue, one your government promised to help with but has so for done NOTHING about.
