What to expect as Parliament resumes today

Parliament is set to resume Today, May 27, 2025, marking the second meeting of the 1st session of the 9th Parliament.

The House went on break on March 29, following an eventful first meeting that started on January 7, 2025.

During the initial eleven-week period, Parliament passed 16 out of 18 bills, including key legislation such as the Electronic Transfer Levy (Repeal) Bill and the Ghana Gold Board Bill.

The House also received one regulation on mining in forest reserves, currently under committee review.

It was a highly anticipated session, especially with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) holding a strong majority.

Significant moments included the vetting of 56 ministers and deputy ministers, the delivery of President Mahama’s first State of the Nation Address, and the 2025 budget presentation by Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson.

However, the session wasn’t without drama. A heated clash during vetting led to property damage and a suspension of four MPs.

Speaker Alban Bagbin later formed a committee to investigate.

Ghanaians are still awaiting the outcome of that probe, along with clarification on the controversy surrounding a “daughter of a murderer” remark.

Looking ahead, the House is expected to debate the Grains Development Bill, with stakeholders hoping it will spur agricultural growth.

Oversight activities, budget scrutiny, and financial matters are also on the agenda.

This upcoming meeting is also expected to address the new nominations to the Supreme Court and debates on other matters of public interest.

As one observer put it, ‘Parliament’s second meeting will test how serious our leaders are about delivering on real reforms”.

Parliamentary observers also anticipate that debates on electoral reforms and recent governance controversies may feature prominently during the meeting.

With the Majority and Minority Caucuses already strategising, many will be watching closely.
