Midwifery student found dead in boyfriend’s room
A tragic incident in Jinijini, Bono Region, has left a family in mourning after 28-year-old Gifty Kyere, a final-year student at the Sunyani Midwifery and Nursing Training College, was found dead in her boyfriend’s room.
According to reports, Gifty allegedly died following a failed attempt by her 23-year-old boyfriend, Edmund Ayomah, to terminate her pregnancy using unsafe and unapproved methods.
Initially, Edmund claimed that Gifty had suffered a severe asthma attack and died because he could not afford to take her to the hospital. However, that account was quickly challenged by investigators.
Under pressure, Edmund later confessed that he had been trying to help Gifty end her pregnancy and that complications from the process caused her death.
Authorities have since taken him into custody as investigations continue.
Gifty’s father shared that she had returned home just a day before the incident to collect her school fees and other supplies. Instead of going back to campus, she visited her boyfriend. That was the last time her family saw her alive.
“This is a heartbreaking loss for our family. Gifty was full of hope, almost done with school, and had a bright future ahead,” her father said, struggling to contain his grief.
The death of Gifty Kyere has sparked outrage and concern, particularly over the dangers of unsafe abortions and the lack of access to proper reproductive health care.
It also highlights the urgent need for education and support systems for young people facing unplanned pregnancies.
Community members and classmates have expressed their condolences and called for justice as the investigation unfolds.
