Ghana under siege – Afenyo-Markin rallies Parliament at #Savethejudiciarydemo

Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has issued a stirring appeal to lawmakers to put aside partisan differences and defend the integrity of Ghana’s democratic institutions.

His call came on Monday, May 5 during a demonstration led by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) against the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

The protest culminated in the presentation of a petition to Parliament, received by Clerk of Parliament, Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror.

“Ghana is under siege,” Afenyo-Markin declared.

“This is not a time for political division. It is a time for unity in defence of the rule of law and the independence of our judiciary.”

He condemned what he described as politically motivated interference in the judiciary and warned that such actions threaten the country’s constitutional framework.

“We cannot allow state institutions to be weakened under the pretext of accountability, Parliament must stand firm as the ultimate guardian of our democracy,” he said.

The protest attracted a significant turnout, including NPP supporters, members of other political parties, and civil society advocates, all united in condemning what they described as the unlawful and politically motivated suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

The petition submitted to Parliament calls for immediate action and demands full transparency regarding the circumstances leading to the Chief Justice’s suspension.
