Health Minister seeks justice for slain 37-year-old nurse

The Minister of Health, Kweku Agyeman Manu, has charged police in the Ashanti region to bring to book assailants who allegedly raped and murdered a nurse in the Ashanti Region.

He is seeking justice for the death of Ruth Eshun, a 37-year-old nurse in the region.

Ashanti Regional Health Director, Dr Emmanuel Tenkorang, visited Sewua Health Centre, where the nurse was employed and the family home of the deceased on Monday.

On behalf of the minister, Dr Tenkorang called on the police to “expedite the investigations so that the culprits will be apprehended”.

Describing the incident as “unacceptable” he indicated that the situation calls for “concern”.

Dr Tenkorang subsequently called on other fear-stricken health officials in the region to “remain calm” while investigations proceed.

He encouraged colleagues and other nurses to “remain strong and courageous” and eschew “fear or panic”

The Ashanti Regional Health Director challenged the health officials to “stand firm”.

The lifeless body of the deceased was found a few metres from her house at Sewua in the Bosomtwe District on Tuesday, February 4.

One person has been apprehended after his phone was found at the crime scene.

Meanwhile, the husband of Ruth, Kwadwo Arhin, a lecturer at the Kumasi campus of the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA,) has bemoaned the death of her beloved.

Mr Arhin, who has been married to the deceased for 11 years said in an interview that even though his wife cannot be brought back to life he “will be so happy if the perpetrators are arrested and dealt with according to the law. So, I want the investigation to be swift”.

The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) subsequently issued a statement signed by its President, Perpetual Ofori-Ampofo condemning the killing and called on the Ghana Police Service to protect health officials.

They also entreated the Ministry of Health (MOH) to protect and ensure the “security and safety of nurses and midwives in all parts of the country, especially hard-to-reach areas.”

The incident has sparked public uproar with hashtag #Justice4RuthEshun trending on social media for delays.
