Over 50,000 teachers promoted — GNAT reveals
The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has disclosed that 50,458 teachers have been promoted after writing an aptitude test for promotion in 2024.
The Association, in a statement signed by GNAT’s General Secretary, Thomas Musah, indicated that this development comes after successful discussions with the Ghana Education Service (GES) during a meeting held on April 25, 2025.
“We can confirm that out of the 54,227 teachers who were successful in the 2024 aptitude test for promotion, 50,458 have been placed on their correct grades in April 2025,” the statement noted.
It added that the outstanding cases, along with a backlog from the 2023 batch, are expected to be resolved by May 2025.
GNAT also shared some positive updates regarding payroll issues, revealing that out of 1,579 teachers who were previously removed from the payroll, 1,417 have successfully had their salaries reinstated.
This leaves only 162 cases still outstanding.
In terms of promotions for lower-ranked teachers, it’s been reported that all 16 regions have submitted the required data to the GES, and those affected should see placements finalised by May 2025.
For teachers returning from further studies, GNAT recognised that many had not received their upgrades since 2023. Fortunately, an agreement has been reached to ensure that these teachers are upgraded by the end of May 2025.
Additionally, GNAT stated that the GES Director-General is committed to issuing directives to Regional Directors to hasten the upgrading process.
GNAT also noted that there is a stakeholders’ meeting set for May 2025 to determine the dates for the next aptitude test.
It further reassured its members that outstanding issues within the Collective Agreement for GES staff, particularly regarding salary disparities within the Single Spine Pay Structure, will be addressed next month.
Finally, GNAT extended its gratitude to President John Mahama for approving a 20 per cent allowance for teachers working in underserved areas, emphasising that this decision serves as a significant morale boost for those facing challenging conditions.
