Bawku conflict: One killed, Police commander’s house burnt (Videos)
One person was killed in Bawku in the Upper East Region, amid renewed clashes on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, afternoon.
Additionally, the private residence of ACP Adamu Seidu, the Bawku Divisional Police Commander, was set on fire during the unrest.
Reports indicate that at least two others have sustained critical injuries.
The situation escalated when one faction involved in a longstanding chieftaincy dispute demanded that women from the opposing side, who were engaged in trading at the market, vacate the area.
A scuffle ensued, prompting police intervention in an effort to restore order. However, it’s reported that some young individuals opened fire on the officers, leading to a return of gunfire from the police.
This exchange resulted in one civilian’s death and left two others injured, sparking a fierce retaliation from the youth. They subsequently targeted the police commander’s private home, setting it ablaze.
It remains uncertain if anyone was inside the residence at the time of the incident.
Reports also suggest that the police barracks in the region came under attack, resulting in a police vehicle being set ablaze.
Consequently, the police service had to evacuate personnel from the premises.
As security agencies strive to re-establish order, tensions remain elevated.
Meanwhile, the police have yet to release a statement regarding the incident.
