Even though the Ashanti Region has been assigned some 47 ambulances for emergency medical care, there are no ambulance stations to house all of the vehicles.
“We have 47 ambulances but not all the constituencies are functioning. Every constituency will have an ambulance. However, we have a lack of stations for these ambulances,” the Ashanti Regional Co-ordinator for the Ghana National Ambulance Service, Dr Dominic Awariyah said.
This left him explaining why it is possible for the public to see multiple ambulances in one constituency even though the ambulances will serve their designated areas.
Volta, Central regions recommission already commissioned ambulances
Currently, there are 31 centres in the region with 16 bays yet to be provided for the fresh ambulances.
Meanwhile, the Regional Minister, Simon Osei Mensah, has appealed to Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives as well as the police to provide parking spaces at their premises for the vehicles until ambulance centres are built.
The handing over follows the commissioning of some 307 ambulances on Tuesday by President Nana Akufo-Addo at the Black Star Square in Accra amid elaborate fanfare.
After the ceremony, the emergency vehicles were dispatched to their various constituencies.
However, some officials including the Volta Regional Minister, Dr Archibald Letsa and his colleague in the Central Region, Kwamena Duncan have been criticised for appearing to repeat the exercise done in Accra.
Meanwhile, President Akufo-Addo has indicated that 147 more centres are to be built to accommodate the new ambulances.
