Commissioner of Police (COP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno has been officially sworn in as the new Inspector-General of Police (IGP) by President John Dramani Mahama in a ceremony at the Jubilee House on Friday, March 14, 2025.
This event, which marks a significant shift in the leadership of the Ghana Police Service, was attended by senior government officials and key security figures.
Addressing the dignitaries, President Mahama commended the outgoing IGP, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, for his selfless leadership and the sense of discipline he brought to the police service.
He urged the new IGP to follow the exemplary leadership of his predecessors and to enhance transparency and trust within the security service.
COP Yohuno’s appointment, announced on Thursday, March 13, 2025, follows the dismissal of Dr. George Akuffo Dampare from the IGP position.
The presidency confirmed that this decision was made in line with Articles 91 and 202 of the 1992 Constitution, following consultations with the Council of State.
During his oath of office, COP Yohuno committed to steering a modern, efficient, and accountable police service, with a particular focus on crime prevention, discipline, and enhancing public safety.
His appointment represents a significant new chapter for law enforcement in Ghana, with expectations to advance modernisation and transformation efforts to address current security challenges.
With over forty years of distinguished service, COP Yohuno brings a wealth of experience, leadership, and expertise to his new role. Previously, he served as the Deputy IGP in charge of Operations, where he played a crucial role in improving security operations nationwide.
His career within the Ghana Police Service includes various key positions, such as the Accra Central Divisional Commander from 2007 to 2009, the Deputy Accra Regional Commander, and later, the Regional Commander in 2013.
In December 2015, he was appointed as the Director-General of the Motor Transport and Traffic Department (MTTD) and subsequently reassigned as Director-General of Administration in 2016.
COP Yohuno’s contributions to national security have garnered significant recognition, including the Grand Medal in 2011 for his dedicated service in combating armed robbery and other criminal activities.
