Former Finance Minister and current Ranking Member of Parliament’s Finance Committee, Dr Mohammed Amin Adam, has pushed back claims by Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson about Ghana’s 2024 economic growth primarily being driven by the mining sector.

According to Dr. Amin Adam, the real engine behind the country’s economic performance was digitalisation and key economic reforms initiated by the previous administration.

Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, March 13, on behalf of the Minority Caucus, Dr. Amin Adam firmly rejected Dr. Forson’s assertion, stating:

“The 2024 economic growth was not largely due to mining, as the Finance Minister wants Ghanaians to believe. It was driven by our strategic investments in digitalisation, which improved efficiency, expanded the tax net, and stimulated economic activity.”

He highlighted how the digital transformation agenda laid under the previous government had strengthened sectors such as banking, trade, and public service delivery, ultimately contributing to broad-based economic expansion.

“The growth we’re seeing is the result of modernised revenue collection systems and enhanced financial transactions. These reforms formed the foundation for sustainable economic development,” he added.

Dr Amin Adam urged the government to recognise and build upon the true drivers of growth—technology and innovation—rather than attributing progress solely to resource extraction.

He also cautioned that misrepresenting the sources of economic growth could lead to misplaced policy priorities and undermine long-term development strategies. He called for sustained investment in digital infrastructure and tech-driven economic reforms to secure Ghana’s future growth.
