5-month-old baby killed amid escalating Bawku conflict
A tragic incident has unfolded in Bawku, Upper East Region, where a five-month-old baby was brutally killed as violence in the area continues to escalate.
According to reports, the child’s mother was ambushed and viciously attacked by unidentified assailants while she was out trading.
During the assault, the attackers forcibly threw the infant to the ground, resulting in the child’s death.
This heartbreaking incident adds to the growing list of casualties in the ongoing Bawku conflict, which has also impacted the Bolgatanga-Tamale highway.
The recent surge in violence has now claimed 55 lives since hostilities reignited in October 2024.
Despite intensified efforts by security forces to contain the unrest and safeguard residents, armed groups continue to carry out deadly attacks, causing widespread fear and uncertainty.
Many families have been displaced, and economic activities in the region have been severely disrupted.
Meanwhile, Defence Minister Edward Omane Boamah has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ending the protracted conflict in Bawku.
Following a high-level meeting at the Ministry of Defence on Wednesday, February 12, with Interior Minister Muntaka Mubarak, the Chief of Defence Staff, Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga, and other legislators, Mr. Boamah assured the public that efforts to restore peace remain a top priority.
In a Facebook post, he stated:
Residents remain hopeful that government intervention will bring an end to the violence, as many continue to live in fear for their safety.
