The Public Utilities Workers Union (PUWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC-Ghana) has raised strong objections to the government’s plans to privatize the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
In a statement, PUWU criticized the Energy Minister’s recent decision to establish a committee tasked with advancing the privatization process, highlighting the lack of engagement with key stakeholders, including the union itself.
“We wish to assure our members of our unwavering commitment to resist any attempt by the government to privatize ECG. Despite being a key stakeholder, PUWU has not been consulted, which is deeply concerning,” the statement read.
The union emphasized its opposition to the privatization plan, citing potential risks to the interests of workers and the public.
PUWU also noted that privatization could undermine the critical role ECG plays in the country’s energy sector.
Leadership, therefore, urged members to remain composed as they take decisive steps to address the issue.
“We call on all members to stay calm and united while we pursue appropriate measures to safeguard our interests. Everyone should be on standby for further updates and directions,” the union stated.
PUWU’s strong stance reflects its determination to preserve ECG’s public ownership and maintain transparency in decisions affecting the energy sector, warning of potential industrial actions if necessary.
