Dompoase accident: Driver remanded to re-appear on Jan 31
A court in the Central Region has remanded in police custody the surviving driver in the ghastly road crash at Domapoase, which left 35 dead.
He is being held concerning his role in events that resulted in the accident on Tuesday that also orphaned many, including a six-year-old.
According to an eyewitness, the accident happened around 4:50 am when a Takoradi-bound bus with registration number GR 5704-18 tried to overtake but failed and collided with a Cape Coast-bound vehicle with registration number GN 3780-10.
The driver who was discharged from the hospital after medical attention, however, discounted the claims.
“It’s not true that I was overtaking another car. I was even on the second gear and that can’t be a speeding gear,” he said.
He will re-appear on Friday, January 31, 2020, for proceedings to continue.
Central Regional Police Commander COP Paul Awini had said that they will pursue the case in court.
“The driver of the Hyundai bus was treated and discharged yesterday (Thursday). We immediately picked him up and detained him to assist in our investigations,” he said earlier before the driver was whisked to the courtroom.
Meanwhile, the police have also debunked a rumour that some of the bodies at the accident scene ran over by other vehicles using that stretch of road.
“No passenger was killed here as a result of a vehicle that ran past and ran over some of the victims that were rescued,” he argued.
“That has not been proven” after investigations so far, he explained.
