The Flagbearer of the People’s National Convention (PNC), Bernard Mornah, has emphasised that President John Mahama is not obligated to appoint PNC members to his government.

In an interview on Tuesday, January 21, Mr. Mornah reaffirmed the party’s independence and focus on its objectives.

Mr. Mornah highlighted that while PNC members had served in previous administrations, such participation should not be misconstrued as a right.

“It is not the first time that a PNC member has been in government. Under President John Kufuor, PNC members served. Under President John Atta Mills, PNC members served. In fact, in the first term of President John Mahama, PNC members were part of his government,” he explained.

Reflecting on the PNC’s alliance with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) during the last election, Mornah clarified that the party’s support was not contingent on expectations of appointments.

“Obviously, the PNC took a solid decision to back the NDC to ensure that we were able to get change. But that is not to say that the NDC is under compulsion to appoint us,” he stated.

Despite the possibility of exclusion from government roles, Mornah insisted that the PNC remained steadfast in its mission and committed to national development.

“The PNC remains a resolute political party. We have a duty to critique and to support government policies and programs where necessary, and so we will continue to play our role,” he asserted.

Mr. Mornah further suggested that the absence of PNC members in government could work to the party’s advantage.

“If you appoint us, it is good. But if you don’t appoint us, probably it’s even better,” he noted, implying that the party is focused on advancing its own strategies.

In conclusion, Mornah affirmed the PNC’s unwavering commitment to its principles and its role in shaping Ghana’s political landscape.

“The PNC will not be deterred by any political appointments or lack thereof. Our commitment to national development remains strong,” he concluded in an interview with Joy News.
