TikTok has announced that it is restoring its services in the United States following an intervention by President-elect Donald Trump.
In a statement, the company expressed gratitude to Trump for offering clarity and assurances to service providers, ensuring they would not face penalties for continuing their support of TikTok’s operations in the U.S.
With over 170 million users in the country, TikTok emphasised the platform’s importance for small businesses, noting that more than seven million U.S. small enterprises rely on it for marketing and growth.
TikTok highlighted that this restoration was a significant step in protecting free speech, describing the move as a “strong stand for the First Amendment” and a response to arbitrary censorship efforts.
TikTok had briefly gone offline in the U.S. after news broke of a new law set to ban the app.
A message appeared on users’ screens stating that the law had been enacted, effectively blocking access to the platform. This brief interruption raised concerns over the app’s future in the U.S.
The company reassured users and businesses by confirming its commitment to working with President Trump on a long-term, sustainable solution to secure TikTok’s continued presence in the United States.
The restoration of service marks a key moment in the ongoing debate over tech censorship and national security concerns as TikTok seeks stability amid uncertainty.
