Bawku curfew renewed following fresh wave of attacks
Following recent attacks, the government has renewed the curfew hours in the Bawku Municipality and its surrounding areas in the Upper East Region.
The decision, issued through an Executive Instrument (E.I.), adjusts the curfew from 8:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m., effective Monday, January 13, 2025.
This replaces the previous dawn-to-dusk curfew imposed to address escalating tensions in the area.
The government has also enforced a total ban on the possession of arms, ammunition, or offensive weapons in Bawku and its environs.
The Ministry for the Interior has warned that individuals found violating this directive will face arrest and prosecution.
In a statement, the government called on chiefs, elders, opinion leaders, youth, and residents to remain calm and work towards peace.
It urged all stakeholders to adopt non-violent approaches to resolve the ongoing conflicts, emphasising the importance of dialogue and cooperation in restoring stability.
Meanwhile, President Mahama is scheduled to meet the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, today, Sunday, January 19, to discuss measures to address the tensions in Bawku and Walewale.
The renewed curfew and related directives highlight the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety and security of residents while seeking long-term solutions to the challenges in the region.
