Flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress, John Dramani Mahama says his administration if given the nod in the 2020 general election will abolish the double-track system.

According to the former President, his second administration will rather work on increasing the number of contact hours between teachers and students.

“We will abolish the double-track system and ensure that we increase the contact hours between teachers and student,” Mr Mahama who lost the 2016 elections to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo said.

The double-track system is a module under the flagship project of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), the Free Senior High School (SHS) program.

The system is to afford the government with the capacity to deal with a large number of placed students who will hitherto not have had the opportunity to access Free SHS as a result of lack of classroom and dormitory spaces.

The module groups students into two, the Green and Gold tracks, where at a particular time one group will be in school while the other will be on vacation.

The system since it began on September 11, 2018, has been characterised by a lot of issues.

Policy think tanks like IMANI and ISODEC and some Teacher Associations like the National Association of Graduate Teachers have raised issues with it.

The Ghana National Education Campaign Coalition (GNECC) among others have also called for the policy to be suspension citing lack of stakeholder’s engagement.

Some parents have also complained about the short time student stay in school as compared to the old system.

Mr Mahama speaking at the launch of the NDC’s Fund Raising Fair promised to invest in the expansion of school infrastructure to make the free SHS policy more effective.
