Daniel Agyei regrets turning down $1m contract after 2009 U-20 World Cup

Former Ghana U-20 goalkeeper Daniel Agyei has revealed his regret over declining a $1 million contract offer shortly after his heroic performance at the 2009 FIFA U-20 World Cup.

Agyei, who saved two penalties in the final against Brazil to help Ghana clinch the trophy, was offered the lucrative deal and an opportunity to play in Europe.

However, he chose to stay with Liberty Professionals on the advice of his godfather, Sly Tetteh, the club’s founder.

“I regret not accepting a $1 million contract after winning the U-20 World Cup. My godfather, Sly Tetteh, advised me against taking the offer,” Agyei shared in an interview with GHOne TV.

Despite the missed opportunity, Agyei made his senior debut for the Black Stars in 2009 and was part of Ghana’s squad for the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations and the FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

However, his club career included less impactful stints with Medeama SC, Simba SC, and OFC Oostzaan Zondag.
