Frimpong Manso named Black Starlets head coach

Bibiani GoldStars coach Frimpong Manso has been appointed the new head coach of Ghana’s U17 national team, the Black Starlets.

The Ghana Football Association named the veteran gaffer as a replacement for Laryea Kingston, who left the job during the qualifiers for the Africa U17 Cup of Nations.

The former Asante Kotoko and Ghana player is expected to prepare a team that will qualify for the next tournament after Kingston’s squad failed to make the tournament this year.

Manso is returning to the role he occupied between 2009 to 2010, having previously worked as assistant coach of the Black Starlets. His career as coach of the national team also saw him work as assistant coach of the Black Meteors.

In his club career, Manso has coached Stade d’Abidjan in Ivory Coast, Asante Kotoko, Karela United, B. A. United, Kessben FC (currently Medeama SC) and Nkoranza Warriors in Ghana.

The Black Starlets have not qualified for the Africa U17 champions since finishing second in 2017 in Gabon.

The two-time African champions were the first Ghanaian national team to win the FIFA World Cup.
