The Electoral Commission (EC) has assured constituents of Ablekuma North and Dome Kwabenya that their Members of Parliament-elect will be declared before the swearing-in of Parliament on January 7, 2025.
The delay in finalizing the results stems from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) failing to submit hard copies of pink sheets needed to resolve discrepancies.
Speaking to the media on Tuesday, December 24, Dr Bossman Asare, Deputy Chairman of the EC in charge of Corporate Services, expressed optimism about resolving the matter promptly.
“We are confident that the two constituencies will have their MPs elect well ahead of the inauguration of Parliament,” he assured.
The EC attributed the delays to disruptions at collation centres caused by party supporters.
These disruptions included property destruction, assaults on officials, and forcing Returning Officers to declare results in some areas prematurely.
“Supporters of political parties invaded collation centres, demanding results be declared in favour of their candidates. This led to chaos, destruction of EC properties, and in some cases, the declaration of inaccurate results,” the EC explained.
Similar incidents occurred in constituencies such as Techiman South, Okaikwei Central, Tema Central, Fanteakwa North, and others.
In some areas, like Ahafo Ano North and Suhum, collation activities were abandoned entirely due to attacks on officials.
One severe case in Obuasi East saw an incorrect candidate declared winner under mob pressure.
However, the EC, with support from the Ghana Police Service and the National Election Security Task Force, has rectified results in 10 of the 12 affected constituencies.
For security reasons, the EC completed the collation process for the remaining constituencies in Accra, rather than in the disrupted areas.
