ORAL isn’t a witch-hunt tool – John Mahama

President-elect John Dramani Mahama has refuted allegations that the Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) committee is a political witch-hunting tool.

Speaking during a meeting with the Canadian High Commission in Ghana on Thursday, December 19, Mr. Mahama addressed concerns about the committee’s work unfairly targeting members of the outgoing administration.

He clarified that ORAL’s sole purpose is to compile evidence of alleged corruption and direct it to the appropriate government institutions once his administration takes office.

“People seem to misunderstand the committee’s role,” Mr. Mahama explained. “We’re receiving reports of corruption and misconduct, and ORAL serves as a focal point for gathering evidence. It is not tasked with investigating individuals but simply compiling information for government agencies responsible for such duties. This is not a witch-hunting committee; we have no brooms to fly at night.”

He further emphasised that ORAL operates pro bono, with no budget or financial burden, ensuring its mission is focused on accountability and fairness.

Mr. Mahama called on political parties and civil society organisations to support the initiative, stressing that ORAL aims to combat corruption and foster transparency, not to target specific individuals.
