Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has reminded the president-elect John Dramani Mahama and National Democratic Congress (NDC) legislators of the expectations Ghanaians have placed on them following their overwhelming election victory.
Speaking in parliament during the first sitting after the December 7 elections, Mr. Bagbin said that the overwhelming endorsement of Mr. Mahama and the NDC MPs by the electorate places a heavy responsibility on them not to fail.
“To whom much is given, much is expected. You cannot afford to disappoint,” he said.
He also congratulated Mr. Mahama on his victory in the 2024 general elections and the NDC MPs for the overwhelming majority of seats they won in the polls, which means they will form the majority side in the next Parliament.
Meanwhile, the Minority Leader, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, charged the NDC and the incoming government to distinguish themselves by upholding the principles of integrity, probity, and accountability.
Dr. Forson emphasised the need for the NDC to prioritise the needs of Ghanaians over political interests.
He stressed that the time had come for the incoming government to correct the perceived failures of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and to deliver on promises that would benefit the ordinary Ghanaian.
The Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, also pledged that the NPP would act responsibly in opposition, focusing on constructive debate and holding the government accountable.
“As a formidable opposition, as a formidable minority, not to be disruptive, no violence, no chaos, but to act within the confines of the law, argue on issues, and distinguish ourselves for the people of Ghana to know that we are NPP.”
