National Film Authority launches “Sell Ghana to Ghana” campaign during Cinema Week 2024

In a push to promote local talent and keep the cultural and economic benefits within the country, the National Film Authority of Ghana has launched the “Sell Ghana to Ghana” campaign for this December.

The initiative coincides with the Ghana Cinema Week 2024 from December 14 to 22, 2024, aiming to spotlight Ghanaian-made films, animations, and games, encouraging Ghanaians to engage with and support local content.

This year’s campaign highlights the impressive work of Ghanaian filmmakers who have produced a series of noteworthy films.

“We have some really well-done films made by Ghanaian filmmakers this year. Let’s take time to see them,” the National Film Authority stated and emphasised the quality and diversity of local cinema.

The campaign also sheds light on the significant but often overlooked sectors of animation and gaming in Ghana. With Ghanaians spending over $60 million on mobile games in 2022, and Ghana ranking high among Africa’s top gaming nations, the NFA is keen to redirect this financial flow back into the local economy.

“Hardly any of the Ghanaian games and animation is watched or played by Ghanaians,” noted the Authority, pointing out the cultural and economic loss this represents.

By advocating for the consumption of Ghanaian animations and games, the campaign aims to bolster the local industry, create jobs, enhance national pride, and extend Ghana’s cultural influence through soft power. “It’s time that Ghanaian animation and games are played by Ghanaians and other African countries,” the NFA emphasized, urging cinemas and e-sports centers to feature Ghanaian-made content prominently.

A highlight of the campaign, “CINEKIDS,” is tailored for children and families, scheduled during the Ghana Cinema Week from December 14-22, 2024.

This event will showcase curated films, animations, and games developed in Ghana, offering a unique opportunity for young audiences to connect with their culture through entertainment. “I am excited about the doors this opens for our kids. If you are a parent, make sure to bring your kids,” the NFA encouraged.

The “Sell Ghana to Ghana” campaign is not just about entertainment; it’s a strategic move to strengthen the local industry, keeping Ghana’s creative and economic resources at home while building a sense of national identity and pride through cinema.

“While it’s great to sell Ghana to the world, for now, let’s SELL GHANA TO GHANA,” the NFA concludes, inviting all to join in this celebration of Ghanaian creativity during the Ghana Cinema Week 2024, themed “CONNECTING PEOPLE THROUGH CINEMA.”
