Chaos erupts at regional collation centre amid Ablekuma North results confusion
Tension remains high at the Greater Accra Regional Collation Centre as the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) disagree over Ablekuma North parliamentary results.
Inside the collation centre, a heated standoff ensued between candidates of the NDC and the NPP, with both sides accusing each other of undermining the will of the people.
Earlier today, the Electoral Commission (EC) directed the suspension of the collation process for the second time, halting proceedings after results from 219 out of the 281 polling stations had been collated.
The initial suspension occurred on Monday during the midway point of the collation process.
This directive has faced opposition from both parties, raising concerns about the fairness and transparency of the process.
Following this, the EC has directed the resumption of the collation process for the Ablekuma North results.
The chairman of the NDC’s 2024 planning committee, Peter Otokunor, who disclosed this, indicated that the EC Chairperson had personally intervened, instructing officials to continue with the collation process.
On the back of that, the officials have returned to the room to crunch the figures once again.
Meanwhile, supporters of the NDC have massed up at the entrance of the Greater Accra EC collation centre.
They are demanding access to the premises and seeking the declaration of the results of the hotly contested race.
To maintain order, military personnel have been deployed to reinforce the police presence and ensure calm within the area.
