The Ghana Police Service has arrested 12 suspects for looting and causing damage to property in some parts of the country.

Preliminary investigations by the law enforcement agency have established that the suspects attacked and damaged state properties, including burning the Electoral Commission (EC) office in Damango in the Savannah Region, causing damage to some residences of District Chief Executives (DCEs) in some parts of the country, and vandalising some collation centres.

Additionally, some of the suspects broke into the School Feeding Project Warehouse at Tamale in the Northern Region and stole items, including foodstuffs.

The police said footages of the attacks, vandalism, and looting have been obtained and are being reviewed by a team of dedicated investigators to get other culprits arrested to face justice.

Background

Angry National Democratic Congress (NDC) youth in the Damongo constituency set the Electoral Commission’s collation centre in the area on fire.

The development reportedly occurred when the individuals attempted to force their way into the centre to observe the collation of results from Saturday’s polls, leading to a standoff with security and EC officials.

The angry youth also destroyed ballot boxes and papers from the just-ended general elections.

Pockets of violence were recorded at multiple locations, resulting in two deaths and over 15 arrests.

Nearly 60 people have died, hundreds injured, and several properties destroyed in election-related violence since 2000.
