A day filled with anticipation and excitement quickly turned into disappointment as many bigwigs of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) were shown the exit.
At the end of the December 7 polls, several prominent incumbents, once considered stalwarts, witnessed their bids for re-election abruptly dashed.
Per results released by the Electoral Commission (EC), their defeat has come to many as a surprise.

- Henry Quartey loses Ayawaso Central seat
The Minister for Interior and NPP MP for Ayawaso Central has lost his seat to the National Democratic Congress’ Abdul Rauf-Tubazu.
While Mr. Quarter had 23,339 (44.35%), Abdul Rauf-Tubazu (NDC) amassed 29,965 (54.99%) to dethrone the experienced MP.
- Egyapa Mercer loses Sekondi seat to NDC’s Blay Armah
Andrew Kofi Egyapa Mercer, the incumbent Member of Parliament for Sekondi, has been defeated in a closely contested election by Blay Nyameke Armah of the NDC.
Egyapa Mercer, representing the NPP, garnered 11,084 votes, representing 42.94% of the total valid votes, while Blay Nyameke Armah secured 14,558 votes, corresponding to 56.40%.
- NPP loses Kwesimintsim constituency to NDC’s Fiifi Buckman
The NPP Member of Parliament for Kwesimintsim Constituency in the Western Region, Dr Prince Hamid Armah has lost his seat to the NDC’s Philip Fiifi Buckman.
Dr Armah, the current Deputy Minister for Works and Housing who once served as the Executive Secretary of the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA), polled 13, 317 votes as against Mr Fiifi Buckman’s 15,927 votes.
An independent parliamentary candidate polled 1,835 votes. The total valid votes cast is 31,079 with 219 rejected ballots.
- NDC surprises NPP as it snatches Assin Central parliamentary seat
For the first time in 24 years, the opposition NDC has won the Assin Central parliamentary seat.
The NDC parliamentary candidate for the Assin Central Constituency in the Central Region, Nurein Shiabu Migyimah, emerged victorious in the December 7 general elections.
Shiabu Migyimah secured a historic win with 16,343 votes, representing 50.6%, defeating the NPP Parliamentary Candidate, Godfred Anewu, who garnered 15,926 votes, representing 49.4%.
- Aboah Sanie loses Mpohor seat to NDC’s Godfred Henry
John Kobina Abbam Aboah Sanie, the incumbent Member of Parliament for Mpohor, has lost his seat to Bentil Godfred Henry of the NDC in a decisive victory.
Sanie, representing the NPP, garnered 8,299 votes, while Bentil Godfred Henry secured 11,680 votes, marking a significant shift in the constituency’s parliamentary representation.
- Titus Beyuo defeats Bright Baligi to reclaim Lambussie for NDC
Professor Titus Kofi Beyuo, the former General Secretary of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) and the NDC parliamentary candidate for the Lambussie Constituency in the Upper West Region, has emerged victorious in a closely watched contest.
Prof. Beyuo’s triumph marks a significant achievement, as he successfully unseated the incumbent NPP MP, Bright Bakye Yelviel Baligi.
Prof. Beyuo polled 13,551 while Baligi trailed with 6,079 of the total votes cast.
- Ursula Owusu-Ekuful loses Ablekuma West seat to NDC
Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, the MP for Ablekuma West, has lost her parliamentary seat in the just-concluded general elections.
The incumbent MP was defeated by Rev. Kweku Addo, the candidate for the opposition NDC.
Ursula faced a disappointing performance, securing only 26,575 votes, while Rev. Addo garnered 31,866 votes, marking a significant victory for the NDC in the constituency.
- Andy Appiah Kubi loses Asante Akyem North seat
Asante Akyem North MP, Andy Appiah Kubi has been unseated by the Independent candidate and businessman Ohene Kwame Frimpong.
Ohene Kwame Frimpong won the elections with a huge margin after securing 26, 926 votes.
The NPP’s candidate, Appiah Kubi polled 8,933 votes while the NDC candidate Kofi Asamoah polled 2,469 votes.
- Ophelia Mensah Hayford loses Mfantseman seat
NPP’s Ophelia Mensah Hayford lost her Mfantseman seat to Prince Ebenezer Arhin of the NDC, who secured 35,832 against her 23,349 votes.
- K.T. Hammond
Kwabena Tahir Hammond, a long-serving MP for Adansi Asokwa in the Ashanti Region, was unseated by the
NDC’s Godwin Animli Dorgbadzi Dorani.
Hammond secured 13,275 votes, while Dorani won with 14,229
- Darkoa Newman
Darkoa Newman of Okaikwei South and Ursula Owusu-Ekuful of Ablekuma West also lost their seats, with Mrs Owusu-Ekuful falling to the NDC’s Rev. Kweku Addo, who won with 31,866 votes against her 26,575.
- Sylvester Tetteh
Sylvester Tetteh of Bortianor Ngleshie Amanfro lost to the NDC’s Okle Felix Akwetey by a wide margin of 37,473 votes to 27,888
- Lydia Alhassan
In the keenly contested Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency seat, movie actor John Dumelo unseated his rival, Lydia Seyram Alhassan.
Dumelo secured 40,561 votes while Lydia polled 27,377.
- Twum Barima
In Dormaa East, Twum Barima narrowly lost to Rachel Owusuaa of the NDC, who secured 12,310 votes to Barima’s 12,050.
- John Peter Amewu
The NDC also won the Hohoe seat where Thomas Worlanyo Tsekpo unseated NPP’s John Peter Amewu.
He polled 14,971 of 46,228 total Valid Votes Cast while the NDC’s candidate polled 31,163 votes.
- Farouk Mahama
The NPP’s incumbent MP for Yendi, Farouk Aliu Mahama has lost the seat to the NDC’s candidate.
The NDC’s Abdul Fatawu Alhassan won the seat with 30, 707 votes, while the NPP polled 29, 819 votes.
- Mavis Hawa Koomson
A major upset occurred at Awutu Senya East when the Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Mavis Hawa Koomson lost to the NDC’s Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunnor.
Naa Koryoo secured 50,886 votes, defeating Hawa Koomson, who garnered 46,638 votes.
