5 Ways To Stay Safe When Dating Online

People choose online dating for many reasons. It has its positives and negatives — it depends on how you use it. I’ve had my own experience with an on-and-off-again online relationship that taught me a lot.

So, these are the things I wish I had done when I first started online dating.

1. Understand the risks
Identifying the risk when you get on an online dating website is essential. People may not be who they say they are; some may even use fake accounts (catfishing) to trick you. That’s why understanding the risks is the first step towards ensuring a safe online dating experience.

2. Protect your personal information
When creating your online dating profile, prioritize your privacy. Don’t give out private information like your full name or address. You may also want to consider using a nickname for more privacy. Additionally, avoid sharing images that reveal too much about you.

3. Recognize the red flags
It’s also crucial to pay attention to any potential red flags. Signs to look out for include messages asking you for money, your financial information, or requests for an in-person meeting immediately. Remember that scammers try to build emotional connections to gain your trust, so take your time and don’t rush into anything.

4. Consider using Facebook/Messenger
There are so many great websites where you can meet someone. I met my fiance through a friend on Facebook. My friend thought it would be a good idea for us to meet up because we both write poetry. We became friends and realized how much we had in common, leading to our current relationship. So, it might be a good idea to branch out and consider other apps than Tinder and Bumble.

5. Don’t be afraid to take risks
My partner was the first person to travel so far away just to be with me. Honestly, I met my significant other just out in the parking lot where my ex lived. I did not care. I left my abusive ex for the guy that I am with now because I wanted to be happy. Although we were homeless for about a year, it was worth it. If you love someone, you should not be afraid of taking risks. And that is what I’ve learned.

After too many failed online relationships, I decided to give up on online dating. But then, something unexpected happened. Meeting my other half made me think twice. He is different from other guys. He’s kind and loving and fights for those he loves. After being in an abusive relationship that made me doubt men, my current partner made me realize that not every guy is a liar. Even though it is sometimes dangerous to date online, it is also worth the risk if you love someone.
