Deputy Transport Minister Hassan Tampuli has defended the launch of Ghana’s first fleet of electric buses, emphasizing that the initiative is a step toward modernising urban transportation and easing traffic.

Speaking in an interview on Thursday, November 28, Mr Tampuli clarified that the electric buses are part of a broader plan to enhance the country’s public transport system.

The buses were unveiled on Wednesday, November 27, in Accra, during a ceremony led by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

The electric buses are being introduced as a pilot programme under the government’s proposed Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system.

Dr Bawumia hailed the project as a cost-effective and eco-friendly solution to the growing transportation challenges in Ghana’s densely populated cities.

Addressing scepticism that the initiative might be politically motivated, the minister explained that it aligned with the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2024 manifesto, which includes a comprehensive strategy to revolutionise public transport.

“The launch of these buses is part of a well-thought-out framework,” he said.

“Our manifesto highlights an elaborate BRT system anchored on electric vehicles. This is not an election gimmick but a critical step toward achieving that vision.”

Mr Tampuli described the pilot programme as a test of the system’s effectiveness, noting that the full rollout will include modifications such as dedicated lanes in the median of roads.

“Ultimately, we will develop an integrated BRT system that optimizes traffic flow and enhances commuting experiences,” he said in an interview with Citi FM.

The deputy minister assured the public that this initiative represents the government’s commitment to sustainable urban development and a greener, more efficient transport system.
