Independent parliamentary candidate for the Effutu Constituency, Louisa Buabeng, has been remanded into police custody by the Winneba High Court.

Justice Marriam Agyeman Gyasi Jawhary delivered the ruling on Thursday, November 28, 2024.

Ms. Buabeng’s troubles began on November 20, when she was arrested immediately after proceedings at the Winneba High Court. There, she was seeking an injunction on the December 7 parliamentary elections, as she accused the Electoral Commission of leaking her nomination documents to the public.

Heavily armed police stormed the court premises, creating a near-chaotic situation.

This caught the attention of the judge, Her Ladyship Justice Marriam Agyeman Gyasi Jawhary, who ordered the police to abort the arrest process, emphatically stating that such actions portray law enforcement in a bad image.

Even though she also ordered the police to exercise restraint and count on the candidate’s lawyer to bring her to the station later, the police team escorted the candidate’s vehicle to the command right after the court proceedings.

She was later re-arrested on November 27 and brought before the court the following morning.

The re-arrest was sparked by the discovery of multiple voter identification cards at the residence of one of her aides.

The aide has been charged with unlawful possession of documents, while Ms. Buabeng faces a charge of conspiracy to commit a crime.

The court has ordered her remand for four days, with her next appearance scheduled for Monday, December 2, 2024.

This development comes as Ms. Buabeng seeks to contest the parliamentary seat for the Effutu Constituency in the upcoming elections.
