Ghanaian rapper Edem has become a subject of heated online discussions following a video in which he criticised fans for repeatedly asking him for financial assistance.

The video, which has been widely circulated on social media, captures the rapper addressing requests for rent money and payments for unsolicited artwork.

During a livestream session, a fan requested support for rent, prompting an irate response from Edem, delivered in pidgin English. He advised individuals facing high rental costs in Accra to consider relocating to their villages, where housing and food are more affordable.

“I beg you. If you no get money to rent for Accra, go back to your village. Free house dey there you fit dey inside. Don’t come put your rent for somebody ein pocket,” he said.

Edem also expressed frustration with fans who create portraits of him and later demand payment. Directing his comments to one such individual, he said:

“‘I drew you, but you didn’t give me money.’ Why, ebe me I send you say draw me? You know the number of people dey dey draw me everyday to show me love? Me send you say come draw me come draw me? If you draw me because you appreciate me wey you be my fan ah, ebe me I send you say draw me? You know the number of drawings dey my room wey I no dey even use am for nothing?”

The rapper criticised the practice of using unsolicited artwork as a means to extract money, describing it as an attempt to “use high-brain.”

The video has sparked mixed reactions, with some social media users supporting Edem’s stance, while others criticised his tone, arguing that public figures should be more understanding of fans’ struggles.

This incident adds to the ongoing conversation about the expectations placed on celebrities in Ghana and the boundaries of fan-celebrity interactions.
