All votes that will be cast for the late presidential candidate of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), Akua Donkor, in the December polls will be declared as rejected ballots, the Electoral Commission (EC) has said.
According to a statement dated November 22, 2024, the EC said it would not count toward the valid votes in the election.
The GFP had nominated Philip Appiah Kubi, the running mate of the late Madam Akua Donkor, as her replacement, but he was disqualified by the EC due to errors and alleged irregularities in his nomination forms.
For the EC, maintaining the current ballot arrangement avoids disruption and minimises the risk of logistical issues.
It will be recalled that the EC suspended ballot paper printing for the 2024 presidential elections following the death of Akua Donkor, the initial presidential candidate of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP).
The GFP flagbearer’s passing was confirmed on October 29, 2024, just weeks before the general election, causing significant implications for the electoral process.
