Majority Leader demands emergency recall of parliament
In a memo dated November 22, 2024, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, Member of Parliament for Effutu and Majority Leader has urged the Speaker of Parliament to recall the House to consider several outstanding and urgent government businesses.
This call comes after the Sixth Meeting of the Fourth Session of Parliament adjourned on November 7, 2024, without addressing these critical matters.
The memo highlights six key areas that require immediate attention, including:
– *Tax Exemptions*: Request for tax exemptions for designated beneficiaries under the One District, One Factory Programme.
– *Ghana Financial Stability Fund*: Approval of a $250 million International Development Association facility.
– *Supreme Court Justices*: Consideration of the President’s nominations for appointment as Justices of the Supreme Court.
– *Mining Lease Agreements*: Ratification of two mining lease agreements with Ashanti Bauxite Company Limited and Barari DV Ghana Limited.
– *Bills*: Passage of several bills, including the Environmental Protection Agency Bill, Social Protection Bill, and Customs (Amendment) Bill.
The Effutu MP, Afenyo-Markin emphasized that these matters are of high priority and require bipartisan cooperation to advance the national interest.
He proposed November 28 and 29, 2024, as the scheduled dates for the emergency recall, allowing Members to return to their constituencies over the weekend to continue their campaign ahead of the December 7 general elections.
The memo concludes by urging the Speaker to seize this opportunity to demonstrate Parliament’s ability to rise above partisan considerations and serve the interests of the Ghanaian people effectively.
