President of the Ghana Bar Association, Efua Ghartey, has called for the upcoming December elections to be conducted with the utmost transparency, fairness, and integrity.
At her swearing-in ceremony on November 5, Mrs Ghartey emphasized the essential role of legal professionals in safeguarding democratic values throughout the election process.
“This election should be handled in a transparent, free and fair manner,” she said.
The GBA President praised lawyers for their efforts in educating the public on electoral issues, noting that their work on high-profile cases has played a significant role in raising awareness.
She highlighted the impact of the Supreme Court’s televised election petition cases in 2013 and 2021, which not only provided insights into judicial procedures but also clarified the legal principles guiding electoral disputes, thus strengthening public understanding and trust in the legal system.
Mrs. Ghartey also recognized the media’s critical role in covering these proceedings, emphasizing how such comprehensive reporting has improved public access to vital information and enhanced transparency in the judiciary.
Beyond electoral matters, the GBA President called on lawyers to deepen their commitment to environmental protection.
She expressed confidence that the dedication of Ghana’s legal professionals can drive meaningful progress in preserving the country’s natural resources for future generations.
“Our collective effort will yield results as we remain resolute in our resolve not to shortchange ourselves where our environment is concerned,” she stated.
